DOOM Eternal – Demon Slaying 101

In DOOM Eternal, Earth is overrun by monstrous demon hordes as only the DOOM Slayer can save humanity against the overwhelming threat.
In your conquest against Hell, you must first master the foundations of what it means to be the DOOM Slayer. Whether it’s your first foray into combat or you just need a refresher, check out our Demon Slaying 101 guide and hit the ground ripping and tearing through DOOM Eternal’s campaign!
THE UNHOLY TRINITY
In DOOM Eternal, you use a ratio of brutality and brains to stand a fighting chance against Hell's armies. This is where the core combat loop comes into play. If you need something in battle, you go and take it from your foes.
Weakened enemies are vulnerable to Glory Kills, executing them and awarding health in one fell stroke. Your Chainsaw can hack through foes to restock your ammo, though you mind your fuel reserves. Finally, immolating demons with the Flame Belch causes them to drop armor pickups when damaged, so set them alight and soak up the extra defenses!
POSITIVELY DASHING
Once unlocked, the Dash ability propels the DOOM Slayer in any chosen direction — both on the ground or even in the air. Dashing is essential for weaving between enemy projectiles, grasping faraway ledges, closing in on faraway targets and much more. In short: Always. Be. Dashing.
Be sure to mind your cooldowns, however, as you can Dash up to two times in quick succession before needing a second to reset. Keep an eye out for Dash Refills in certain levels - these reset your cooldown and allow for even longer strings of high-speed traversal.
MODS MAKE THE SLAYER
As you progress, you’ll unlock special Mods that add to your arsenal. From the Plasma Rifle's deadly Heat Blast to the Heavy Cannon's Micro Missile attachment, you can switch between your available weapon Mods on the fly, opening a wealth of options for carnage.
Not only do Mods expand your demon-slaying capabilities, but they also change how your weapon behaves when activated. Experiment with your weapons to find the right tools for the right situation. (Totally unrelated, but have you ever seen a Cacodemon gulp down a Sticky Bomb?)
MASTER YOUR WEAPONRY
After unlocking a Mod, Weapon Upgrade points can be used to improve your gear and boost your firepower. Weapon Upgrade Points are earned by reducing the Demonic Corruption Meter in each level, indicated by your HUD. How do you clear a level’s Demonic Corruption? By slaying every demon in the vicinity, of course!
Completing challenges for your weapon Mods (or spending Weapon Mastery Tokens found throughout levels) will unlock that Mod’s Mastery ability. These skills unleash the full power of your Mods, taking their damage-dealing potential to the max.
POWER UP YOUR SUIT (AND PLAYSTYLE)
Weapons aren’t the only thing you can upgrade in DOOM Eternal. Acquiring Praetor Suit Points from combat allows you to unlock and activate perks for the DOOM Slayer’s Praetor Suit. With five categories to choose from (Fundamentals, Exploration, Frag Grenade, Ice Bomb and Environment), use your Praetor Suit Points to hone your Slayer into a powerful weapon of demonic destruction.
You will also encounter Runes you can collect in levels. These sources of power can be equipped to enable special abilities for the DOOM Slayer. However, while you choose which of your collected Runes to carry into battle, you have a finite number of slots that can be active at one time. Pick wisely and find a combination of Runes that suits your playstyle (or presents some exciting combat opportunities.)
PUSH THE LIMIT WITH SENTINEL CRYSTALS
As you battle through DOOM Eternal’s campaign, the forces of Hell will ramp up their onslaught against the Slayer. Collecting Sentinel Crystals will improve your Praetor Suit’s armor, health, and ammo reserves, making the Slayer even tougher in a fight.
Using the Sentinel Crystal menu, you can also add Bonus Upgrades to enhance your how you play, from picking up resources from further away to increasing how long demons stay aflame!
