Look, we know: If you asked 20 different people to name their five favorite levels of the DOOM series, you’d probably get 100 different answers. Each map has its own strengths, and no two players play DOOM the same way. That said, some levels just linger in memory, based on novelty, challenge or pure, clever design.
5. Hell - DOOM 3
You knew this was going to happen. In DOOM 3, the Marine scraps and scuffs his way through all kinds of UAC facilities on Mars from the corporate division of Mars City to the classified halls of Delta Labs, but it was only a matter of time before all roads led to Hell – and DOOM 3’s Hell is a special one.
The level strands you in one of Hell’s many lava-riddled pits, stripped of all your weapons. From there, it’s a mad scramble to rebuild your arsenal from what’s strewn across the fiery landscape as you dodge Lost Soul attacks and Imp fireballs. Hell in DOOM 3 doesn’t just stand out because the player is dragged into the demons’ den – fighting through the twisting, organically-designed level with hastily acquired gear harkens back to the gameplay of the original DOOM and DOOM II, injecting some old-school flair in DOOM’s more atmospheric third entry.
