Top 5 Secrets of DOOM - #1: “Secret 4”

The DOOM franchise is positively bursting with secrets. From Easter eggs and hidden collectibles to entire levels to uncover, each game serves up a hefty helping of rewards for those who venture off the beaten path.

There are so many, in fact, that it’s a near-impossible task to pick just five to highlight, so go ahead and share your own favorites in the comments!

1. “Secret 4”

The mark of a truly great secret is when only an exclusive few are in on it. The fourth tracked secret in Industrial Zone, the fifteenth level of DOOM II – better known as “Secret 4” – is one of the most enduring secrets in videogame history because it took literal decades to solve properly.

See, DOOM II featured a ton of hidden or hard-to-reach areas that were officially designated “secret”; the game would track how many you’d set foot in and then give you a completion percentage for those secrets at the end of the map. Some were hidden behind secret doors, while others required leaps of faith or other feats of daring.

Secret 4 was one of the former, a seemingly simple affair that required opening a section of wall and stepping onto a teleporter. Only, there was a problem: Due to a characteristic of teleporter pads, the player couldn’t actually set foot in the precise area that would cause the secret to be considered complete. This was widely considered a bug, with the secret only being accessible via cheat codes.

In August 2018 – 24 years after the game’s release – a player discovered that an enemy could push Doomguy onto the pad, causing the secret to trigger with no cheating required. As a result, this DOOM II level was completed “honestly” for the first time nearly a quarter of a century after the game came out.

Now that’s a secret.
