Top 5 Weapons of DOOM - #4: The Soul Cube

When you’re up against all the forces of Hell, it’s important to have the right tools for the job. Thankfully, DOOM delivers in spades, offering as many perfectly gruesome tools a Slayer could ever hope for.

While we eagerly await spending time with DOOM Eternal’s dramatically expanded arsenal of weapons (just take a look at footage of the DOOM Blade and Equipment Launcher for an idea of what to expect in future versions of this list), let’s look back at the best weapons the series has given us so far.

4. The Soul Cube

There are a lot of reasons to love any given weapon in the DOOM franchise. Some are quick and reliable tools against demonic threats, others are hard-hitting and satisfying to wield. Some are just simply badass. DOOM 3’s Soul Cube is all of the above, earning it a spot on this along with the fact that it’s also tactically fascinating.

Other weapons in DOOM rely on conventional ammunition like bullets, shells and the like. The Soul Cube, however, is fueled by death - charging up as the player relieves enemies of their life force. Other weapons can only destroy; the Soul Cube has a more productive side, replenishing the player’s health as it blasts through enemies. Other weapons fling projectiles at enemies; the Soul Cube flings itself – and automatically targets the enemy with the most health.

Long story short, it’s a delightfully unusual weapon and one that proves extremely deadly in the right hands. It even earned a repeat appearance in the Lazarus Labs level of DOOM (2016). You can find the Soul Cube hanging out on a desk in Olivia Pierce’s office but alas, this particular one appears nonfunctional.
