Top 5 Secrets of DOOM - #4: Demon Destruction

The DOOM franchise is positively bursting with secrets. From Easter eggs and hidden collectibles to entire levels to uncover, each game serves up a hefty helping of rewards for those who venture off the beaten path.

There are so many, in fact, that it’s a near-impossible task to pick just five to highlight, so go ahead and share your own favorites in the comments!

4. Demon Destruction

Toward the end of DOOM (2016), the DOOM Slayer finds himself fighting through Lazarus Labs, a major source of an awful lot of the awfulness that’s been going on so far. This is where the, putting it lightly, misguided Dr. Olivia Pierce kept her office, laying out her increasingly bizarre plans for demonic invasion.

It makes perfect sense that her office computer contains software involved in the manipulating of demons. What does catch us by surprise, however, is that one of the programs is Demon Destruction: a fully playable match-three puzzle game bearing a strong resemblance to Bejeweled or Candy Crush.

Instead of gems or sweets, players match up demons for points. Line up three or more Pinkies, Barons of Hell and the like and they disappear, making room for more matchable baddies to drop from the top of the screen. The game uses assets from the very first DOOM games, lending it a charming retro vibe to go with its strangely addictive quality.

The existence of the game itself isn’t the only secret: Make your way to the High Scores screen and you’ll find numerous sly references to DOOM release dates, current and past designers and in-universe characters. Yes, even Pierce herself appears to have killed plenty of time swapping demons.
