Yes, we know, all DOOM moments are unforgettable. But some are more unforgettable than others. Here are five of our favorites:
5. Your First Boss Fight
We’ve discussed this before, but it bears repeating: The boss fights in DOOM (1993) were something a lot of players at the time had never experienced before.
Taking on a huge and horrifying enemy virtually face-to-face, while not entirely unprecedented (thanks to Wolfenstein 3D’s Mecha-Hitler) at the time, was still extremely novel.
For most players, this experience first happened at the end of Knee Deep in the Dead, DOOM’s first episode. The levels leading up to this encounter conditioned players to expect a certain range of enemies, roaming through rooms and corridors at roughly human scale. But suddenly, a level leads out to a much larger area, a pair of doors open, and two Barons of Hell appear to mess up your day, bigger and nastier than anything seen so far.
It’s impossible to overstate the impact this encounter had on players of 1993; the novelty alone made it an exceptionally memorable experience. But whether you hopped on the DOOM train then or much later, DOOM bosses have always been something special. And the feeling you got beating that seemingly insurmountable fight for the first time? Simply unforgettable.
