Look, we know: If you asked 20 different people to name their five favorite levels of the DOOM series, you’d probably get 100 different answers. Each map has its own strengths, and no two players play DOOM the same way. That said, some levels just linger in memory, based on novelty, challenge or pure, clever design.
4. Spawned Fear – DOOM 64
The eighteenth map from DOOM 64, Spawned Fear, pits players in a hellish library with a winding series of corridors, secrets and bloodthirsty demons who don’t seem to be here to turn in overdue books.
What makes Spawned Fear stand out is how much it manages to cram into a single map. This map has it all – moody, dynamic lighting (a first for the series at the time!), nefarious traps to dodge, puzzles to solve, and visually distinct environments that not only make the level memorable, but feel aesthetically unique to DOOM 64 as a whole.
On top of interesting looks and gameplay, Spawned Fear also features a hidden entrance to a hidden level called “In The Void” – an eerie, fog-drenched nothingness that happens to also house a key item essential for powering up DOOM 64’s demon-frying laser, the Unmaker.
