When you’re up against all the forces of Hell, it’s important to have the right tools for the job. Thankfully, DOOM delivers in spades, offering as many perfectly gruesome tools a Slayer could ever hope for.
While we eagerly await spending time with DOOM Eternal’s dramatically expanded arsenal of weapons (just take a look at footage of the DOOM Blade and Equipment Launcher for an idea of what to expect in future versions of this list), let’s look back at the best weapons the series has given us so far.
1. The BFG 9000
Like anything else could go in this spot. This big, friendly gun has been a staple of the DOOM franchise from the very beginning – and it’s always been a force to be reckoned with.
From its first appearance in DOOM (1993), players knew the BFG was something special. Not only does the weapon do extraordinary amounts of damage when its main projectile strikes an enemy, but it also inflicts grievous injury on any enemy unlucky enough to even be near the passing projectile. As a result, the BFG runs double duty as both a boss-slayer and a room-clearer.
The BFG was always the One Gun to Rule Them All, but there’s something about its appearance in DOOM (2016) that cemented its top-tier status. Perhaps it’s the wonderfully detailed animations of enemies getting positively vaporized, or maybe that the game offers more hordes of enemies in one place than before for maximum carnage, or the presence of the hard-hitting music track that accompanies your first time using it, or all the above.
Whatever the reason is, the fact remains that the BFG is the weapon that is uniquely, unequivocally DOOM. There’s simply nothing else you’d rather have in hand when facing the hordes of Hell.
