Top 5 Weapons of DOOM - #2: The Super Shotgun

When you’re up against all the forces of Hell, it’s important to have the right tools for the job. Thankfully, DOOM delivers in spades, offering as many perfectly gruesome tools a Slayer could ever hope for.

While we eagerly await spending time with DOOM Eternal’s dramatically expanded arsenal of weapons (just take a look at footage of the DOOM Blade and Equipment Launcher for an idea of what to expect in future versions of this list), let’s look back at the best weapons the series has given us so far.

2. The Super Shotgun

What’s better than redecorating a demon’s face with a fistful of lead? Why, redecorating a demon’s face with two fistfuls of lead, of course. This sawed-off, double-barreled instrument of destruction was introduced in DOOM II, giving players a virtual cone of death at their fingertips.

Like its single-barreled cousin in the original DOOM, the Super Shotgun doesn’t do a whole lot of damage at long range. But woe betide any enemy that happens to stray too close because this weapon excels when up-close and personal. A single shot can obliterate two low-level enemies (provided they’re foolish enough to stand too close together) or a medium-strength enemy in a single blast. Even larger enemies think twice before taking the full brunt of the Super Shotty’s might.

Though it didn’t appear in the first game, the Super Shotgun became an instant classic and has made appearances in every game since. DOOM Eternal will be no exception, adding its spin on the ol’ standby by adding the all-new Meathook – a brutal grapple hook that reels the Slayer right to where the Super Shotgun does its worst: point blank.
