Even from its earliest days, DOOM loves to go over the top. Even with an arsenal of awesome weapons, a cast of vicious monsters to slay and enough speed to bring the two together in a supremely satisfying fashion, but what if you could have more?
What if you were even faster? Even stronger? Even more brutal? That’s what pickups bring to the table, and here are five of our favorites.
In one form or another, invisibility has been an element of the DOOM series since the beginning. DOOM (1993) and DOOM II featured the Partial Invisibility powerup, which would render a player’s character semitransparent and caused enemy attacks to be much less accurate. It also came in handy in multiplayer matches, making the player particularly hard to see.
But it’s Invisibility’s appearance in DOOM (2016) that earns it a spot on this list. Found only in the multiplayer mode, the camouflaging pickup was absolutely devastating in the right hands. As with previous incarnations, Invisibility makes the user transparent, rendering the character as a visual distortion. Think of the Predator from its eponymous sci-fi franchise and you’ll get a good sense of what that might look like.
Thanks to the intricately detailed maps, a player cloaked this way is very, very hard to spot. Combine this with a powerful close-range weapon like the Shotgun and your opponents will be six(point six-six) feet under before they even register a threat.
